I would watch him run after the flocks of sheep, play with the kids, act as the pack leader for Luna and Tobia, his inseparable friends, the master of his life and his dignity. He would indulge others, without ever belonging to anyone.
But her instinctive freedom provoked him, it was hard for him to resist her and she snatched him away from me on a sunny day.
I could not soothe the pain until one day, while I was driving, I felt like I still had him next to me… and I wondered: why can’t I come to terms with it? The answer is that I would have wanted him forever, that I would have wanted a sign of his presence continually…
And one day the sign arrived! When I got back home, I found a message in my voicemail. It was my neighbour speaking in an excited voice: “Lorella, you have to come… Oscar and Luna… they gave birth to seven puppies!!! One is just like him!”
I rushed to see them and among the puppies that ran and played only one was sitting, staring at me like Oscar did when we first met.
It was the answer to my pain, his little alter ego… but that is another story, 16 years long.
